The Candlestick

Exodus 25:31-40; 37:17-24

Comment: Along the south wall of the holy place was the candlestick (not candlesticks) with six branches. It was the only source of light. The light from the candlestick and it's six branches reflected off the golden walls filling the sanctuary.

  • Beaten from one pure talent of gold (25:31,39)

  • Comment: Seemed to be resemble an almond tree that was budding and producing almonds (fruit of the almond tree.

  • There were 22 almond shaped bowls, 10 flowers, 10 knobs and three branches.

Comment: in Numbers 16:1 to 17:-8 the LORD proved to the nation of Israel that Aaron and his family were chosen as high priest and the priest who would serve in the holy place by Aaron's rod that budded and produced almonds.

  • Hebrews 3:1,4:14, 7:26, and 12:46 show that Jesus Christ is our high priest.

  • Comment: The candlestick is the Branch, the rod out of the stem of Jesse in Isaiah 11:1 that has budded proving Jesus Christ is the true high priest

Exodus 31:1-6; 35:30 Bezaleel was the LORD's choice to make the candlestick.

He was filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship.

  • Comment: According to Psalm 111:10; Proverbs 1:7, 9:10, 15:33 Bezaleel and those who worked under him would have been filled with the fear of the LORD.Their fear of the LORD kept them from straying from the instructions of Moses and the Holy Spirit.

  • Comment: The exact details of the he candlestick, the cherubims, the gold crowns around the table and mercy seat could only come from the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

The candlestick as the Word

  • Psalm 119:105 ¶ NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

  • Psalm 19:8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.

  • Proverbs 6:23 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:

  • In Jeremiah 1:11 Jeremiah is shown a rod of an almond tree as evidence that the LORD will quickly perform what His word said.

  • John 1:1 Jesus is the Word

  • John 9:5,12:46 Jesus is the light

The olive oil which produces the light as the Holy Spirit

  • 1Samuel 16:13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. .  .  . 1Samuel 16:14 ¶ But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, . . .

  • 2Samuel 23:2 The Spirit of the LORD put the words in David's tongue that he spoke

  • John 16:13-14 Jesus taught the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth (John 17:17) and and will glorify Jesus. Jesus told his apostles that the Holy Spirit would receive from Him what he would show them.

  • Read Isaiah 11:1-5. Note Isaiah 11:1-2 ¶ And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: 2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;

  • Comment: Notice how Isaiah 11:1-2 fit with the six branches that come out of the three knobs of the candlestick. See the image Candlestock2 (click on thumbnail).

Comment: The candlestick is Jesus Christ, Israel's Messiah, the true High Priest. Powered by the Holy Spirit (the olive oil). The glory of God shinning forth, fillingin the holy place.

Note: Some teach this is representative of Christ and the seven churches of Revelation 1:12,20. In these verses are seven candlesticks. Each church is it's own candlestick. Christ is seen as the Son of man with the seven candlestick surrounding Him.The candlesticks are not branches coming out of Him.
